It is not okay to hit your children

The Ministry of Women, Community and Social Development has launched a campaign that aims to eliminate family violence.

M.W.C.S.D.’s Assistant C.E.O. for Research, Policy and Planning, Fitiao Susan Faoagali says while it is against the law to physically abuse anyone, members of the community still constantly neglect the law and are still unaware of family violence.

“The Family Safety Study shows that 60 percent of women reported that they have experienced violence from their partners. 90 percent of children reported they have experienced or witnessed violence within their families,” she said.

“100 percent of people with disability said they have witnessed and experienced violence within their families.

“It is about time to look at those statistics and start changing the way we behave or treat each other.”

The campaign is now communicated through television, radio, social media, community sessions, posters, pamphlets, media and campaign champions.

Fitiao also said: “The 16 days of activism awareness programme is already underway and there are several villages that are supporting the programme by taking part in various events that are on the pipeline.”
