Village prepares for Christmas travellers

As the Christmas season approaches, one village has already begun their gift for all the tourists visiting the country.

Every year, those who travel to Samoa are always met with a beautiful drive from the Airport to Town; whether it’s the clean orderly villages trees and bushes during the day, or the bright lights at night, it’s a sight truly to be marvelled.

Tufulele is one of those villages and according to the Village Mayor, Tagiilima Si’u; preparations are on the way.

Aged 40, Tagiilima was spotted leading the women council in a roadside cleanup for Christmas.

“This is just some small work our women council are doing to help out the village,” she told the Village Voice.

“We have yet to do our final end of year project. So right now as you can see, the womens’ council are just preparing for the Christmas visitors because they will drive past here from the airport. “So we want to leave a good impression on those travellers when visiting Samoa.”

Tagiilima says all this work is a small gift for the tourists and travellers.

“One of the usefulnesses of the work we’re doing is obviously to have a beautiful clean village,” she said.

“The other usefulness is to make our country beautiful for the tourist. It’s something all the villages along this road do to prepare for the visitors.

“I see this work as a good way to move forward as a village. We do all of this in unison so it’s good with strengthening the bond of the villages as well as making everyone happy and proud to call our area home.”

The work they do is also seen as a lesson to the village youth.

“This is also a good way to teach the youth of the village,” Tagiilima said.

“As we work, we try and teach the young ones to keep doing work like this. We tell them not to wait for occasions but to always keep the village clean and tidy.”

Asked about how general life in the village was, Tagiilima said everything was great.

“Everything in our village  is great, glory to God there is peace and order here,” she said.

“Having women committees who empower one another is one of the reasons why everything is going alright here in the village. Mothers are the pillars of the family.

“They are the ones who deal with issues involving the family, especially the children. So empowering one another in our committee is the best way to empower each individual family in the village.”

All in all, Christmas joy and excitement is really building at Tufulele. “Like I mentioned before, this is not the final project we have installed for Christmas,” Tagiilima said.

“Once it’s decided, we will do our final project next month before we have a big village celebration for Christmas.”
