Asco Motors warns Toyota vehicle owners

Local automotive car seller Asco Motors has warned owners of Toyota vehicle models Rav4 ACA21 and Yaris NCP92 that their vehicles could be fitted with defective airbags.

The company took out a quarter page advertisement in yesterday’s Sunday Samoan to warn vehicle owners in Samoa and to advise that they are doing a replacement of the defective airbags free of charge.

The advertisement, under the headline “Takata Airbag Special Service Campaign”, asked the public if they owned a vehicle that was a Rav4 ACA21 and Yaris NCP92.

“Your vehicle may be fitted with a defective Takata airbag which could kill or seriously injure you or other passengers in the vehicle. Replacement of a defective Takata airbag is free of charge by Asco Motors,” stated the advertisement.

Pictures of the two Toyota model vehicles were also published in the same advertisement.

It is not known how many Toyota Rav4 ACA21 and Yaris NCP92 vehicles are registered in Samoa as that information is held by the Land Transport Authority (L.T.A.). It is also not known if Asco Motors has alerted the L.T.A. to the defects that the vehicle manufacturer has identified in the airbags, and whether other companies that sell the same model vehicles in Samoa will also alert their customers and offer a similar service.

It is understood Toyota-manufactured vehicles are not the only ones affected as reports from around the world indicate that cars made by Honda, BMW, Daimler, Fiat Chrysler, General Motors and Subaru are also affected by a worldwide recall of over 100 million Takata-made airbags. The Japanese company has been given until the end of 2019 to complete the recall of its product.
