The man who has scarred a mother for life by deforming her face in an attack at Faleula last year is appealing his sentence of 11 years in prison. 

Uso Auvale Taumata Bragovits through his lawyer Pau Mulitalo made an application before the Supreme Court yesterday to appeal his case. 

The lawyer did not elaborate in Court what grounds his appeal is based on. 

However, the National Prosecution Office lawyer, Ofisa Tagaloa objected to the appeal. 

Mr. Tagaloa told the Court his submission will be filed when the matter is called again. 

Supreme Court Judge, Justice Lesatele Rapi Va’ai adjourned the matter until Friday this week. 

In August this year, Bragovits was sentenced to 11 years in prison by Justice Mata Tuatagaloa. 

The Judge compared Bragovits’ action to a “caveman” and did not accept mitigating factors claiming that the offence was “incidental and nor premeditated”. 

In that case, lawyer Pau claimed the victim was partly to blame for the attack because she gave the defendant false hope when she agreed to marry him. 

But Justice Tuatagaloa disagreed. 

According to the police Summary of Facts, the incident occurred on the 22nd October, 2015 around 5a.m. when the victim was on her way to early morning Mass at Faleula Catholic church. 

She was accompanied by her 14-year-old son and her niece when the attack occured in the church compound.

Bragovits and the victim had been in a de facto relationship until the victim ended it and he became violent towards her. On the morning of the incident, the accused waited for the victim with a machete. 

According to the medical report, the injuries sustained by the victim were very serious and will leave her scarred for the rest of her life. 

The wound on her neck was 15cm deep which also split her right ear and the right side of her face. 

Another wound was 40cm on her upper back and she lost one of her fingers.
