Mika’s plea for water

Water is life.

It’s a daily necessity the family of Mika Tasi, of Faleasiu-uta, does not have.

When the Village Voice spoke with Mika yesterday, he blamed the government for not doing their job.

“They said we have the resources, we have our people to work on our lands, we have commitment and we are in peace,” he said.

“But they do not take notice of what is happening to families living in the rural area, we need water.”

Mika enjoys life as a farmer. He has no complaints there.

He is single with no children but enjoys taking care of his whole family, especially his nieces and nephews.

“I’m a farmer and I have no intention of looking for another job,” he said.

“I love what I do. I provide what I can for my family.”

Mika lives with his extended family of 20 members. He said everything is fine as they have electricity and food supplies.

But he cannot say the same thing about water.

“It has been a burden for more than 10 years now,” he said. “It is not easy collecting water when it rains and getting water from our neighbors.

“The government water supply does not reach our area but only the families closer to coastal areas.”

The rain is their only source of water.

“But it doesn’t rain all the time. We therefore  ask families who have access to water for help…. day in and day out.”

Asked if they have approached the government for help, Mika said yes.

“Four years ago,” he said.

For now, they are hoping to get a water tank.

“My family really needs water, not only for food, drinking and bathing but also for health reasons. We have young children who need water.

“I hope that this programme the ‘Village Voice’ will voice my plea for water so the government can take notice.”
