U20 campaign kicks off in Savai’i

The inaugural Samoa U20s campaign kicked off yesterday with the first trials held in Iva, Savaii. 

Great turnout and talent displayed from the big island. Selection for the final Samoa trials will be held on 18 January 2017 in Apia. 

The main purpose of trials yesterday was to select a rep team from Savai’i to play in the final trial’s against Upolu based players,” according to Head Coach Fa’aofonu’u Junior Leota. 

Fa’aofonu’u Junior Leota has taken over the reigns   from former head coach, Ramsey Tomokino who is away for international duties.  Fa’aofonu’u is ecstatic and excited as ever to be coaching the team this year.  

He spoke about his new appointment with the Samoa Observer. He said, “It’s a privilege and always been a goal.  As a rugby player its good to come back and give back to your country.” 

He has been working closely with Director of Coaching, Namulauulua Alama Ieremia, who accompanied him alonogside staff from the Samoa Rugby Union  to the Savai’i trials.  The coaches are looking to assemble the strongest players all of Samoa has to offer by holding trials in Savaii. 

Because of the teams outstanding performance in the World Rugby U20’s Trophy  last year, Samoa has been elevated to the highest level of U20’s rugby,  to the World Championships.  

Head Coach said that the promotion to the World Championships is really great for the players to showcase their talent at an elite level and really important for player development.  

The World Championships   will take place in Tbilisi, Georgia from May 31-June 18.  The reigning champs are pooled with England, Australia, and Wales.  

Samoa is already on the right track to repeat success.
