No matter where our lives take us, we must return home when we are called to serve our family.

That is the philosopy that Va'ā Tafaoga Tofa Iakopo Kim from American Samoa took to heart when it comes to family.

Tafaoga was amongst the 14 new Chiefly titles that were bestowed in Sala’ilua Savaii during the festive season.

The newly bestowed Chief, Va'ā Tafaoga was honoured and humble given its her first Chiefly title in her family.

“The ultimate reason why I took up this privilege is because of the Love I have for my family. Being a Matai not only identify who you (family) are, it's love and service in action.”

Another Chief Leo'o Iakopo Tofa Iakopo's said this is an experience of a lifetime.

Sharing his experience, Leo'o Iakopo said he’s happy and content with the taking the latter in service to his family.

“As I take upon this Matai title I will always remember the meaning behind the word 'Matai' as one old song goes..."na tofia e le Atua Samoa ina ia pulea e Matai, auā o Lona Suafa na vaelua i ai".....so I count it a blessing.”

According to Va'ā Tafaoga the last time their family underwent a Saofa’i ceremony was back in 2008.  She also thanked her family for the opportunity to serve.

“Majority of us who were honored to be bestowed the titles are from overseas however when we are called to serve in the family, we come home,” she said.

Va'ā is the Ali'i title: Tafaoga Tofa Iakopo; Asia Tasi; Mativa Fa'atamala Antonio; Va'ā Pili Fa'atamala; Sione Terry Kim; Va'ā Sipaea Iakopo; Va'ā Epifania Taliaoa and Aalofagia Lova.
