A baby boy born to parents from Vaito’omuli Savai’i is Samoa’s first baby for 2017.

This was confirmed by Dr. Manatua Iati, of the Tupua Tamasese Meaole Hospital, who helped the mother deliver the baby boy at 1.05pm on Sunday.

“It was a quiet day and the mother gave birth at 1:05pm on Sunday afternoon,” she said.

“The mother is from Vaitoomuli, Savai’i and that was the only baby that was born on New Year’s day.”

Dr. Iati said there was only one Christmas baby as well.

“The mother was from Faleula and she gave birth at around 8 o’clock in the morning of Christmas,” she said.

“It has been a quiet Christmas and New Years but the mother was overjoyed when she carried her son on New Year’s day.”

It was not possible to get a comment from the parents of the first baby of 2017 yesterday as they had left for Savaii at the beginning of the week.
