While the official count continues down at Mulinu’u, the Police have declared a peaceful and successful 2016 General Elections.

And the Ministry’s Spokesperson, Su’a Muliaga Tiumalu, has thanked members of the public for the cooperation and playing their part.

“It was a very peaceful Election Day,” said Su’a.

“We are delighted with how things have turned out and we thank everyone for their contributions.”

Su’a said there were minor incidents – including traffic issues – but overall it was a very peaceful weekend. The alcohol ban during the election day was a key factor in keeping the peace.

More than 400 police officers were allocated to some 350-election booths throughout the country on voting day, this time last week.

Police officers started going out to the villages on Thursday and their operation did not finish until Saturday.

Today, several Police officers are stationed at the Office of the Electoral Commissioner at Mulinuu to guard the official count of the Special votes.

In the meantime, Su’a thanked members of public for their support and assisting police officers to ensure the safety of Samoa.

He also thanked the village councils in every village for playing their role.

“Without that support, the outcome could have been quite different,” he said. “We are extremely grateful and we extend a big thank you to everyone.”
