Honour your parents

That is the opinion of Luaipolu Ioane from the village of Levi Sale’imoa.

He is 22 years old.

“I believe that honouring your father and mother is the key to success.” he told the Village Voice.

“That means that we (young people) have to honour them (parents) with both actions and attitudes not just words.

“For we all know that actions speak louder than words.

“We all know that this is the first commandment with a promise, so that you and I may live long on the earth.

“Growing up in my family, this (verse) was what I was taught when I was young and up until today, that one verse of the bible is still in my head.

He went on to say that “I think many of young people are missing out the importance of this verse, because of the changes in our country nowadays. “But, obeying parents goes hand in hand with honouring them and that’s the same with the our fa’aSamoa way of living.

“Yes, that includes listening, obeying and seeing because the obedience that they learned as children will serve them well in honouring others especially in organisations such as private and public sectors.

“I know that honouring is not easy and is not always fun.

“But this is a certain path to our purpose in life.

Lolani truly believes that life is the greatest gift of all.

“As you can see, I am on my way to the shop to buy food for our family meal tonight,” he told the Village Voice.

“To me, I prefer staying here in my village and life here is great.

“There are no troubles and no challenges. “We have strong village councils here and they help maintain peace in the villages and that’s why I love the life we have here.

“About the changes of today, it’s understandable because we are moving forward and the world is changing.

“Even though some of the changes are not good for us and our culture, we can’t do much about it because we can’t keep changes from happening.

“I think the best thing for us is to adapt and get used it.
