The Samoa Koko Industry Association (S.K.I.A.) has named the winner of its recent brand device design competition.

S.K.I.A. Establishment Committee Chair, Saena Mulitalo Penaia, was joined by New Zealand Acting High Commissioner, Nick Hurley, in awarding the certificates and prizes, last week.

The overall winner is Benuel Inia.

Mr. Hurley congratulated  him and the koko industry on formalising an association and endorsed the decision to develop a unique brand device that will ensure S.K.I.A’s digital and print media communications reflect the professionalism the koko industry is striving for.

After commending the winners for the effort put into their work, Saena also reminded members present that sustained progress and success will only come from working together as an industry, rather than through pursuing purely individual commercial objectives.

Twenty talented artists entered the competition. The overall winner received a 12.9-inch iPad Pro, complete with a protective case. All other prize recipients — including two for second-equal and one for third place — were awarded the smaller 10.5-inch iPad Pro.

The balance of the meeting was taken up by a progress report from the Samoa Cocoa Industry Development Initiative (S.C.I.D.I.).

S.C.I.D.I. Project Director, Dr. Hans Maurer, announced that the Project’s Afia cocoa nursery, managed by S.T.E.C., is now operating, with the first cocoa beans being bagged this week.

Once fully operational, the nursery has capacity for growing approximately 80,000 plants, per year.

Over the last few months, S.C.I.D.I. and S.K.I.A. have also developed the S.K.I.A. Strategy which will be launched in early 2019.

The Samoa Chamber of Commerce is the appointed S.K.I.A. Secretariat, and cocoa growers and farmers interested in joining S.K.I.A. should contact Hobart Va’ai or Helen Skipps at the Samoa Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Sanalele Complex, Apia.
