Heavy rain forecast for Samoa

Samoa’s National Weather Services (N.W.S.) advised late yesterday that they have issued a heavy rain advisory for all of Samoa.

The heavy rainfall is due to an active convergence zone which is currently affecting the islands in the north, thus enabling the build-up of high pressure systems to the southwest of Fiji Island and triggering the rainfall in Samoa.

The N.W.S. said the convergence zone is leading to cloudy conditions and showers for the southern districts of Samoa, and is expected to descend over the islands this afternoon and will lead to widespread rain and heavy downpour with gusty periods.

Small craft and fishing boats were also advised, in a separate advisory issued by the N.W.S., of strong trade winds to the south of the island. Samoa’s coastal and open waters can expect waves and swells of 2.5 to 3.0 meters or higher.
