Tau Avengers reigned victorious in the Samoa Tag Incorporated tournament for the men’s division despite yesterday’s heavy downpour in Apia.

Converging on the Marist field at Mulivai yesterday morning, 14 teams competed in the men’s division while 10 teams participated in the open-mix division.

In the men’s teams there are 16 players, eight on the field and eight subs. For the open-mix there were four boys and girls in each team, who would make up eight on the field and eight subs. It was a one-day tournament.

Samoa Tag Incorporated president, Faaofonuu Leota, said the tournament was part of the teams’ preparations for an international tournament next month.

“The purpose of the tournament was to serve as a qualifying tournament. It was also to prepare the teams for the international tournament happening in five weeks’ time. But also an opportunity for teams that haven’t played in the Samoa tag tournament to play one tournament so they can qualify for the Teuila tournament,” he said.

“This sport is unique due to it being a non-contact sport. Different to touch when you drop the ball you play on. And you can kick the ball. There is no age limit, so it’s for all ages, anyone can play, any shapes and sizes. The Teuila Tag Festival is happening in five weeks. It is an international tournament and it is the first ever international tag tournament that Samoa is hosting.”

The Teuila Tag Festival has attracted 40 local teams and to 14 overseas teams from New Zealand and Australia and will boost the work of the Samoa Tag Incorporated to promote the sport in schools and villages.

“We recently just established six months ago and we have had a tournament every month. We go out to schools and villages to promote the tag sport. At the moment we have a total of eight board members and six referees’ officials.  Tag is for everyone, all different shapes and sizes and no limits on ages,” he added.

The major sponsor is Taula Beverages with the winners receiving prizes of beverages and cash.
