A moving Independence ceremony

Dear Editor,

What a moving Opening to our 2016 Independence Celebration at the Tuanaimato Sports Complex Grounds last Wednesday with our Head of State’s Independence address to the Government and the people of Samoa calmly delivered in the Samoa language with all the nuances of its beauty, power and richness our opening Independence Ceremony was just glorious.

Long live His Highness Tui Atua Tupua Tamasese Efi Meaole and the Masiofo.

Had only the address by His Highness was introduced with a word of prayer the Independence Opening Ceremony would have been the most complete, the most moving and the most uplifting ever.

For it is only right that this address by His Highness the Head of State be so introduced.  Samoa, so-called founded on God, and without a word of prayer in its most celebrated hour is preposterous, utterly ridiculous and most ill-advised.

If ever the government of Samoa needs any divine intervention in the way of good fortune it is the Independence Celebration Opening Ceremony which demands the most earnest of supplications and thanksgiving.

The so-named Prayer Service for Independence held the night before is never a substitute, never an excuse for a word of Prayer on Independence Day.

For with God, each day and every day is a new day.

I hope there will be a word of prayer, even of one word, come the next Independence.

The words in the Preamble to the Constitution of the Independent State of Samoa contain words to this very effect.

May Samoa Live!
