Positive election mood

Thousands of voters exercised their rights to choose the next government yesterday when the General Elections was held. Throughout the country, the mood was generally positive as voters lined up to cast their votes. Deidre Fanene talked to some of them about the election and their thoughts about their votes in today’s Street Talk:

This year’s election has been excellent, no problems at all. I think it’s because of the new amendment that the government of the day came up with about the no campaigning, no more picking up of the voters and all of that. So it’s been such a good day.

There have been a lot of changes in this year’s election. These are good changes because I can see that a number of problems we have had in previous elections have been eliminated. I’m just happy to cast my vote and exercise my right as a Samoan.

It has been a peaceful election this year. In our village, we haven’t had any issues so far.  I guess the only one that we are waiting for are the results. There will be people who will be happy and there are some that will be very sad but that’s the nature of these things. Not everyone can win. There has to be a winner and losers.

I just finished voting. I’m so happy I’ve had my say in the election. The mood of the election has been  great, it’s positive and very peaceful. People have been very calm and there has been the mutual respect between candidates and their commitees which is good to see. This is the best thing about Samoa. I wish all candidates the best.

It’s been pleasantly quiet. Compared to previous elections, this is my favaourite so far. I’ve cast my vote and now I’m going to wait for the result hoping my candidate wins. I know they can’t all win. I wish the rest of Samoa a happy election. All we want are leaders who care for us and do what’s best for this country.

The election has gone really well this year. I’m just glad that it’s over and hopefully God will choose the right people to look after our country with love and respect.
