An earthquake which struck Samoa only a few minutes ago has left the community in a state of panic.

While it could not be confirmed yet how strong it was, it was one of the longest tremors felt in Samoa for a while.

Reports from across the country say the quake lasted close to a minute, forcing people to run out of their homes and into open spaces.

Early reports say the quake also rocked Tonga. It measured 6.9 and located 138km north east of Tonga.

Efforts are being made to contact the Office of Meteorology Division for more details and whether there is a tsunami warning.
