Tanker driver’s quick reaction averts tragedy

Quick thinking by the driver of a fuel tanker averted what could have been a disastrous crash at Tufulele on Wednesday afternoon.

The Petroleum Products Supplies (P.P.S.) tanker was heading towards the airport when a vehicle in front turned left without using any indicators.

This forced the driver of the truck to act quickly as there were other vehicles coming from the opposite direction.

A bystander who declined to reveal his name told the Samoa Observer the driver of the tanker saved what could have been a “deadly crash.”

“The driver of the car that was right in front of the truck is wrong,” he said.

“He just turned to the left side of the road without turning on his blinkers.

“So the driver of the truck slammed the breaks and turned the truck, forcing it on the side of the road. He crashed the truck into a breadfruit tree.

“I reckon in doing that he saved the lives of those in other vehicles and families located in the area as well.”

The bystander said the tanker was full and it was heading to the airport.

“Lucky no one here was near our house when the truck turned at the time,” he said. “The truck could have ended in the sea or exploded.”

The bystander said motorists have got to be extra careful.

“We are now into the festive season, we have to be careful so that everyone enjoys a happy and peaceful Christmas and New Year.”

Attempts to get comments from the Police were unsuccessful.
