Ma’a Felise is proud of the way his village is developing.

The man from Tuana’i is especially upbeat about the opening of a new school in the village.

Speaking to the Village Voice, he reminded us that education is vital and this should be the government’s priority.

“I am grateful for all the help from our government, especially from the government of Japan, because without this partnership, we would not be able to achieve this school building for our children,” he said.

“You know everyone here, in this village, contributed what they can to see this school building come to life and it’s true that our village has contributed as well, but the government of Japan donated more than we deserve.

“And that’s why I’m thankful to the Japanese government because without them and their help, everything that you are looking at right now would not exist because they are the ones who have donated more into this project.”

Ma’a spoke about the importance of projects like these and how it could benefit our country.

“It is good to have these projects and also good to continue on having these projects because this is for the betterment of our own children.

“Our village will try and hard to continue on doing their work and that is making this school a better place so that the kids of Tuana’i who are in other schools will feel like attending their own village school instead of going to other schools in faraway places and you know, hopefully the parents will know that this school is good enough for their kids academic studies.

“There is nothing wrong or bad to have your children attend this primary school because I’m pretty sure that the process of learning about the writing of the letter ‘A’ in this school is the same as writing the letter ‘A’ in other schools at Apia.

“I’m not asking for only the betterment of our school, but because I believe other schools in rural villages agree with this idea.

“It saves time and it saves money for any parent.”

Moreover, Ma’a also pleads the government to fix their work roads (auala galue).

“This is important because our work roads (auala galue) are roads and places where most farmers, like myself, work and we need good roads to get there.

“Those are some of the things we need more projects on but other than that, I think most of the things in our village are getting better.”
