On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I congratulate the people of the Independent State of Samoa on the occasion of the 54th anniversary of your nation’s independence this June 1. 

The friendship between the United States and Samoa is based on our common values and cooperation on issues of pressing concern to both of our countries.   Together, we work to protect our shared ocean and environment, promote democracy and sound governance, and foster economic development in the Pacific.  The United States looks forward to continuing our close relationship in the years ahead. 

To all Samoans around the globe celebrating this Independence Day, I wish you peace and success in the year ahead.
