A prisoner who was released during the weekend parole has been charged in relation to an incident at Salelologa where a man was stoned and his vehicle torched last week.

Confirmed by the Police Media Officer, Maotaoalii Kaioneta Kitiona yesterday, he said the prisoner spent the Easter weekend with his family in Savaii when the incident broke out.

He also confirmed that there were two victims. Maotaoali’i thanked the Alii ma Faipule of Salelologa for their quick intervention that possibly saved lives. On Saturday, a Police officer in Savai’i who spoke on the condition of anonymity said: “It happened at around 12midnight after the nightclubs closed. The vehicle driven by a male from Salelavalu nearly crashed into a vehicle from Salelologa and that’s what started the dispute.” The source said the Salelavalu vehicle was stopped in front of the wharf.

“That’s where young people stoned the vehicle and set it on fire. It was quite scary and we are glad that no one else was involved.

“The driver ran for his life and was lucky to be rescued by the sailors of the Lady Samoa III.” The Police officer praised the quick intervention of the matais of Salelologa.

“It was good that matais from Salelologa responded quickly and assisted the Police that night,” he said.
