Fix our road please – Faaletalaiga

Meet Faaletalaiga Launiu, 64, from the village of Tuanai Uta.

He told the Village Voice yesterday that life in Tuana’i Uta is great but the only problem is their road.

“Our family has been living here for many years now,” said Fa’aletalaiga.

“For your information, this road problem is an ongoing issue here at Tuana’i-uta.”

“Not only for Tuana’i but for the rest of the country.”

“I’m not so sure which company or the contractor that came and fixed our road in the last two years.”

“From that time until today, the condition of this road has gone really bad, potholes are everywhere and we just can’t avoid them.”

“We’ve been asking our Members in parliament the past years and still nothing has been done.”

“As you know, there are a lot of families moving and living here because the government urged us the past years to move to higher ground for safety during tsunamis and other natural disasters.”

“Now many families move up here, and we’re facing this problem.”

“This is not safe for our children... when it starts to rain heavily then the state of the road get worse and worse and this is really sad.”

He said the government should step in to help.

“Nowadays, there’s a big increase in vehicles in Samoa, so personally, what’s the point of buying a new car to help my family when the road is full of holes?”

“This isn’t good especially when looking at the prices of the cars nowadays.”

“I think Tuana’i is not the only village that face this problem and this issue should be one of the priorities because it costs us.”

Faaletalaiga blamed the idea of using cheap tar to fix the problem.

“The government should stop paying those contractors that are using cheap tar.”

“The fact is, the government is wasting money on paying them (contractors)...you can tell of how easy the rain washed away those tar.”

“What really sad, these contractors seems to know what the problem is but they don’t really care, all they want is money.”

Aside from road problem, Faaletalaiga said life in the village is great.

“Yes, we love our life here.” he said.

“As you can see, I am now working on some chores outside of our house and at our cocoa plantation.”

“I thank God for all His blessings and guidance everyday.”
