Different people have different goals in life.

For fifteen-year-old, Lui Veni from the village of Leauva’a, he wants to become a doctor. And he is taking steps towards realising that dream by making an honest effort at Sagaga College this year.

“I know that without working hard and honestly, I can’t achieve this dream,” Lui said. The dream started at a young age.

“Whenever I am naughty, my mother would always threaten to take me to the doctor. So I thought back then that a doctor could kill people at anytime they want.”

“But I’ve now started to realise that they’re the ones who maintain and enhance human health.”

“Their profession is dedicated to the prevention and treatment of diseases for different people.”

“That’s why I want to become a doctor in the future, I want to taste being a doctor – to help anyone when they’re in need and sick.”

For now, Lui said he will have to restrict his help work to his house.

“My everyday life at home is to help my mother around the house whenever I have time,” he said.

“I remember one day when I went with my mother to the hospital, I saw an old woman begging for her life because of a disease.”

“I’m not sure what the disease was but from that day that dream of becoming a doctor started. I want to help the needy and sick people.”

“Not only that I want to help others anywhere, anytime but most importantly to give my family a good medicine for life.”

This is Lui’s first year at Sagaga College.

It’s not the brightest college in the country but Lui is determined to work hard.

“It’s not an easy journey but I will try my best to achieve this dream in the future.”

“Looking at how they (doctors) perform their duties – it is a very rewarding and a satisfactory job.”

“Personally, I have a lot of work to work on before reaching this dream, yes I know, it’s a long journey of study to become a good doctor.”

“I’ll try my best. I know that every child like me has a dream, I have confidence in myself to accomplish that dream.”

Lui is the seventh of 13 siblings.
